Shapewear Care and Washing Guide: How to Make It Last
Share
Why Proper Care Matters
Shapewear is made from elastic, compression fabrics — typically nylon, spandex, or a blend. These materials are durable, but they can lose their stretch and shape if washed incorrectly. A little care goes a long way in keeping your shapewear performing the way it should.
How Often Should You Wash Shapewear?
Wash your shapewear after every 1–2 wears. Because it sits close to the skin, it picks up sweat and body oils quickly. Washing it regularly keeps it hygienic and prevents the fabric from breaking down prematurely.
Hand Washing (Recommended)
Hand washing is the gentlest method and will extend the life of your shapewear the most.
- Fill a basin or sink with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water — it damages elastic fibres.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent or a detergent made for delicates. Avoid bleach or fabric softener.
- Submerge the shapewear and gently squeeze the water through the fabric. Don't scrub or wring.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool water until no soap remains.
- Gently press out excess water — don't twist or wring the garment.
Machine Washing (If Needed)
If you prefer to machine wash, follow these steps to minimise damage:
- Use a mesh laundry bag to protect the fabric.
- Select a delicate or gentle cycle with cold water.
- Use a mild detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener.
- Wash with similar colours to avoid dye transfer.
Avoid: Hot water cycles, heavy-duty cycles, and washing with rough fabrics like denim or towels.
Drying Your Shapewear
This is where most damage happens. Follow these rules:
- Never tumble dry. Heat destroys elastic fibres and will cause your shapewear to lose its compression permanently.
- Air dry flat or hang to dry in a shaded area. Direct sunlight can fade colour and weaken fabric over time.
- Reshape the garment while it's damp and lay it flat on a clean towel or drying rack.
- Allow it to dry completely before storing or wearing again.
Storing Shapewear
- Store folded flat in a drawer, not bunched up or stuffed into a tight space.
- Keep away from sharp objects like jewellery or hooks that could snag the fabric.
- Don't store in direct sunlight or in a very hot space (like a car or near a radiator).
What to Avoid
- Bleach — breaks down elastic fibres quickly.
- Fabric softener — coats the fibres and reduces compression over time.
- Tumble drying — heat is the biggest enemy of shapewear.
- Ironing — never iron shapewear. If it's wrinkled, hang it in a steamy bathroom to relax the fabric.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your Shapewear
Even with good care, shapewear doesn't last forever. Replace it when:
- It no longer holds its shape or provides compression.
- The fabric is pilling, thinning, or has holes.
- The waistband or leg bands have lost their elasticity and roll down.
- It takes noticeably longer to dry (a sign the fibres are breaking down).
With proper care, quality shapewear can last 6–12 months of regular wear. Browse our collection to find your next favourite piece.
