Shapewear for Different Body Types: How to Find the Right Style

One Size Does Not Fit All — And That's the Point

Shapewear works best when it's matched to your body and your goals. The right style targets the areas you want to smooth or support, without compressing areas that don't need it. Here's a practical guide to finding what works for different body shapes.

How to Think About Body Types

Rather than rigid categories, think about where you carry weight and what you want shapewear to do for you:

  • More weight around the midsection — focus on waist and tummy control.
  • Fuller hips and thighs — look for styles that smooth the hip and thigh area.
  • Larger bust — consider a bodysuit with built-in bust support.
  • Straighter silhouette — waist-cinching styles can add definition.
  • Petite frame — shorter styles prevent bunching; avoid styles that are too long in the torso.

Best Styles by Goal

For Tummy and Waist Smoothing

A high-waist brief or shaper short is the most effective option. It covers from the waist to mid-thigh, smoothing the tummy, waist, and upper hips in one piece. Look for a wide waistband that sits flat — a narrow band can dig in and create a visible line.

For Full-Body Smoothing

A bodysuit shaper covers the torso from bust to crotch. It's the best option if you want a smooth line from top to bottom under a fitted dress or jumpsuit. Make sure the bust area fits correctly — too small and it will compress uncomfortably; too large and it won't provide support.

For Hip and Thigh Smoothing

A thigh shaper or shaper short targets the hips, seat, and upper thighs. This is a good choice if your waist is already where you want it and you're focused on the lower half. Look for styles with anti-roll leg bands so the hem stays in place.

For Back Smoothing

If you're wearing a backless or low-back outfit, look for a low-back bodysuit or brief. Standard shapewear can show above a low-back neckline, so the cut matters here.

For Petite Frames

Shorter torso styles prevent the shapewear from bunching at the waist or riding up. Check the product description for torso length guidance. A high-waist brief is often a better fit than a full bodysuit for petite frames.

For Plus Sizes

Look for styles with reinforced panels in the areas you want to smooth, and a wide, flat waistband. Avoid styles with very narrow waistbands or leg bands — these can cut in and create discomfort. Our size chart covers the full size range; always measure and compare before ordering.

What to Wear It Under

  • Fitted dresses: Full bodysuit or high-waist brief, depending on the neckline.
  • Trousers or skirts: High-waist brief or shaper short.
  • Jumpsuits: Bodysuit shaper (check the crotch opening matches the jumpsuit's).
  • Casual wear: Light compression shaper short for all-day comfort.

A Note on Compression Level

Regardless of body type, start with light or medium compression if you're new to shapewear. Firm compression is more effective but less comfortable for extended wear. You can always move up once you know how it feels on your body.
